Martha Gambrel Noyes

Martha Gambrel was born on August 28, 1846 to Henry Gambrel and Nancy Montgomery Gambrel. I learned from a book of newspaper clippings located at the Princeton, Indiana library that Martha was married first to a Mr. Isaac Combs. Mr. Combs was reported to have been from Illinois. I don't have any information as of yet on their marriage but am currently looking into that. After this marriage ended, Martha married William M. Noyes on June 27, 1875 which is verified by the Marriage Register in Wabash County, Illinois. They were married by a justice of the peace by the name of John A. Phar. At some point after they married, William and Martha moved to Lafayette County, Missouri where they had one daughter, Laura Belle Noyes. In the 1880 census for Davis, Lafayette County, Missouri, William is listed as a farmer who was 27 years of age and had been born in Illinois. His fathers place of birth is not listed but his mother was born in Indiana. Martha's occupation was "Keeping House" and she was 33 years old at the time. Their daughter Laura was born on March 23, 1882. Martha was also blessed with a nickname. She was called "Aunt Matt". I'm not sure when Mr. Noyes died but Martha is listed as a widow on her death certificate. At the time of her death she lived with her daughter at 3217 Prospect Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. Of the two pictures on this page the one at the top was taken in Kingman, Kansas by a studio that was out of business by 1919 and the one below was taken at Washington, Iowa. My Uncle Frank Rigg tells me that both Martha and Laura were teachers. He knows nothing about William Noyes and believes he may have died early in the marriage. I'm still researching their marriage and his death. Martha died on October 11, 1932, outliving her 3 sisters. Her death was a result of Bilateral Pneumonia. She was buried at Mt. Washington Cemetery on October 12.
